Southwest Companion Pass FAQ 2019

southwest companion pass credit card

If you travel domestically in the United States very much, you’ve probably heard of the Southwest Companion Pass. This pass allows you to designate one person as your companion. Every time you fly Southwest, that person can come with you for free (and you can change your companion a few times each year!).

For years, this pass has been out of reach for most people. You had to fly over 100 qualifying flights per year or earn at least 110,000 qualifying points in a single year. Right now, though, until February 11th, you can qualify simply by getting a credit card and spending $4000 on it in 3 months. You’ll get to keep the pass for the remainder of 2019.

The companion pass isn’t all you’ll get, either! Complete the required spending and you’ll also get 30,000 Southwest points. Since Southwest calculates the cost in points based on the cost of the flight, these points are worth about $450.

Choose between three of Southwest’s current cards: the Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card, the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card, and the Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card.

Apply For Your Southwest Card

You can apply for the Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card, the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card, or the Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card. Click on “Apply Now” at each of those links to get taken to the online application. Most people receive an immediate response.

You will not be eligible if you meet the following conditions:

  • You already have a personal Southwest credit card.
  • You’ve taken advantage of a Southwest signup bonus for new members within the last 24 months.
  • You’ve gotten more than 5 credit cards in the last 24 months. Southwest runs their cards through Chase, and this is a Chase rule.

If you’re a frequent traveler and you like to fly Southwest, this card could get you quite a few bonus flights this year, especially if you tend to travel regularly with the same companion. Southwest is hoping to expand their service to Hawaii later in 2019, so the card could become even more valuable.
